GST, TDS & Income Tax for Business in India

Bookkeeping, GST return filing, TDS management, advance tax, income tax returns, and financial statement preparation — run as your outsourced finance and compliance department, with every deadline tracked on a managed compliance calendar.

What Is Accounting and Tax Compliance for Business in India?

Accounting and tax compliance is the combined, ongoing function of maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring that all statutory tax obligations — GST, TDS, advance tax, income tax, professional tax, and related filings — are met correctly and on time. For a business operating in India, these obligations are numerous, interconnected, and carry significant penalties for non-compliance. Getting them right requires professional knowledge, systems, and consistent attention.

At N D Savla & Associates, we provide integrated accounting and tax compliance services for businesses, startups, professionals, NGOs, and organisations of all sizes. Our team handles the full spectrum of financial record maintenance and tax obligation management — from day-to-day bookkeeping and monthly GST filing to annual income tax returns and statutory compliance reporting. We function as the outsourced finance and compliance department for our clients, ensuring that their books are maintained professionally and every compliance deadline is met.

Accounting compliance refers to the maintenance of books of account in accordance with applicable accounting standards and statutory requirements. Under the Income Tax Act 1961, businesses above specified income thresholds are required to maintain proper books of account. Under the Companies Act 2013, incorporated entities must maintain accounts in compliance with the applicable financial reporting framework. Under the GST Act 2017, registered taxpayers must maintain records of all supplies, purchases, and tax liabilities.

Tax compliance refers to the timely and accurate discharge of all tax obligations. For most businesses in India, this includes: GST return filing (GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B monthly, GSTR-9 annually); TDS deduction, deposit, and quarterly return filing; advance tax computation and payment in four instalments; income tax return filing by the applicable due date; and professional tax compliance as per the applicable state regulations.

Our accounting and tax compliance services sit at the core of our virtual CFO offering, working alongside payroll management, MIS and budgeting, and due diligence support to give clients a comprehensive financial management solution.

What Is Outsourced Accounting and Tax Compliance?

Outsourced accounting and tax compliance is the model where a business delegates its financial record maintenance and tax filing obligations to an external professional firm — typically a CA firm — rather than managing them with in-house staff. The business provides the transaction data — invoices, bank statements, purchase records — and the outsourced provider handles everything else: coding transactions, maintaining ledgers, preparing GST returns, computing TDS, preparing financial statements, and filing all returns.

What is the benefit of outsourced accounting and tax compliance? The primary benefit is access to professional expertise at a cost that is significantly lower than maintaining equivalent in-house capability. A business that outsources accounting and compliance to a qualified CA firm gets the benefit of up-to-date tax knowledge, professional systems, and experienced staff — without the overhead of salaries, training, software, and management that maintaining an equivalent in-house team would require.

For startups and SMEs in particular, outsourced accounting and tax compliance provides a scalable, professional solution that grows with the business. A startup in its first year of operations needs basic bookkeeping and GST filing. As it grows, it may add TDS compliance, payroll management, income tax planning, and eventually audit support. An outsourced provider like N D Savla & Associates can scale the service to match the growing complexity without the business needing to hire and manage additional finance staff.

TDS Management and Compliance

We manage all TDS obligations: identifying transactions subject to TDS, computing the applicable deduction, ensuring deposit by the 7th of the following month, and filing quarterly TDS returns (Form 24Q for salary, Form 26Q for non-salary payments). We also prepare and issue TDS certificates (Form 16 and 16A) to deductees. For businesses that also need TDS return filing as a standalone service, we handle that too.

We compute advance tax liability for each of the four instalments (June, September, December, March) and ensure timely payment. Financial Statement Preparation

We prepare monthly and annual financial statements — profit and loss account, balance sheet, and cash flow statement — that are accurate, timely, and useful for management decision-making and for submission to banks, auditors, and regulatory authorities.

What Does the Compliance Calendar Look Like?

What is included in tax compliance for business? The answer depends on the nature and size of the business, but for most businesses operating in India the calendar runs on a fixed monthly, quarterly, and annual rhythm:

Monthly

GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of each month, TDS deposit by the 7th, and payroll processing with the associated statutory deductions.

Quarterly

Quarterly TDS return filing in Form 24Q and Form 26Q, issue of TDS certificates, and advance tax instalments in June, September, December, and March.

Annual

Income tax return filing by the applicable due date, GSTR-9 annual return, financial statement finalisation, and tax audit under Section 44AB where applicable.

As and When Required

GST notices and discrepancy responses, income tax notices, assessment support, and reconciliation of GST-reported turnover against the income tax return.

NoteMonthly GST filing deadlines are the 11th (GSTR-1) and 20th (GSTR-3B) of each month. TDS must be deposited by the 7th. Missing these dates attracts interest at 18% per annum and late fees. Our compliance calendar management ensures you never miss a deadline.
ImportantMismatch between GST-reported turnover and income tax return income is a key trigger for scrutiny assessments and income tax notices. Ensuring that your GST filings, TDS filings, and income tax return are consistent and reconciled is critical. This is one of the core functions of our integrated accounting and tax compliance service.

How Has Accounting and Tax Compliance Evolved in India?

The compliance landscape for Indian businesses has changed dramatically over the past three decades, and the trajectory has consistently been towards greater complexity and digitisation.

Before the 1991 liberalisation, Indian tax compliance was characterised by high rates, multiple levies, and significant opacity. The tax reform process that gathered pace in the 1990s and 2000s — reducing income tax rates, expanding the tax base, introducing service tax, and simplifying indirect taxes — simultaneously increased the number of businesses with formal tax obligations and made compliance more systematic.

The introduction of GST on 1 July 2017 was the single most significant compliance change in independent India’s history. The CBIC portal brought all indirect taxes under a single, technology-driven framework with monthly return filing requirements, invoice-level matching, and automatic input tax credit reconciliation. While GST simplified the overall indirect tax structure, it increased the monthly compliance burden substantially and created a large demand for professional accounting and compliance support.

The progressive digitisation of income tax — including pre-filled ITR forms, Annual Information Statements, the Faceless Assessment Scheme, and the integration of third-party data — has made the Income Tax Department's information about every business far richer and more real-time. This increased visibility means that discrepancies between reported income and actual transactions are detected faster and more systematically than ever before. Professional accounting and tax compliance management has therefore become more important — not less — as the digitisation of tax administration advances.

Common Questions on Accounting and Tax Compliance

What is accounting and tax compliance for business in India?
Accounting and tax compliance is the combined function of maintaining accurate books of account in accordance with applicable law and standards, and meeting all statutory tax obligations — including GST return filing, TDS deduction and deposit, advance tax payment, and income tax return filing — correctly and on time. It is a continuous, recurring obligation for every registered business in India.
What is included in tax compliance services for business in India?
Tax compliance services for a typical Indian business include monthly GST return filing (GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B), GSTR-2B reconciliation, TDS computation and deposit, quarterly TDS return filing, advance tax computation and payment, annual income tax return preparation and filing, GST annual return filing, and support for any notices or assessments from tax authorities.
Who handles accounting compliance for companies in India?
Accounting compliance for companies is typically handled by a qualified CA firm or chartered accountant through an outsourced or retainer arrangement. For smaller businesses, outsourcing the entire accounting and compliance function to a CA firm is the most cost-effective and professionally robust approach.
What is outsourced accounting and tax compliance for a startup?
Outsourced accounting and tax compliance for a startup means delegating all bookkeeping, GST filing, TDS compliance, and income tax filing to an external CA firm. The startup provides transaction data; the CA firm handles all compliance. This gives the startup access to professional financial management from day one without the overhead of in-house finance staff.
Why is accounting and GST compliance important for growing businesses?
For a growing business, clean accounting and consistent GST compliance directly affect creditworthiness, investor attractiveness, and legal risk. Banks assess GST filings and ITR history when evaluating loans. Investors review compliance records in due diligence. Non-compliance results in penalties, interest, and the risk of assessment proceedings — all of which are far more costly than the professional fees for proper compliance management.
