Implementation Review of Accounting Systems
ERP Configuration, Controls, Data Migration & Audit Readiness
Pre-implementation assessment, post-implementation review, and ongoing system audit for ERP and accounting software in Indian businesses — so the system produces financial information management and auditors can actually rely on.
Overview
Why Accounting System Implementations Need Independent Review
Accounting systems are the backbone of financial reporting — every management decision, tax filing, and audit opinion ultimately rests on the accuracy of what the accounting system records and produces. Yet accounting system implementations are one of the most reliably problematic projects businesses undertake: charts of accounts configured incorrectly for the business structure, user access controls that allow inappropriate transactions, data migrations that bring forward incorrect opening balances, and reports that do not reconcile with source transactions. The consequence is financial information management cannot trust, audits that require extensive manual reconciliation, and compliance filings at risk of inaccuracy.
The confidence most businesses place in their accounting system is rarely proportionate to the rigour with which it was implemented. Implementation teams — whether internal or external — are focused on getting the system live on time and within budget. Independent review of whether the software has been configured correctly, whether the data migration produced accurate opening balances, and whether the reports the system generates reconcile with the underlying transactions is rarely on the implementation team's priority list. The result is that most ERP and accounting system implementations go live with configuration errors that only surface when management notices reports that do not make sense, when an auditor identifies reconciling items, or when a tax filing produces a number the finance team cannot explain.
The cost of discovering these errors after the fact is significantly higher than preventing them. Correcting a chart of accounts that has been incorrectly configured is straightforward before the system goes live; it requires extensive transaction reclassification and financial restatement if it is discovered after twelve months of trading. Similarly, a data migration error that brings forward incorrect opening balances can contaminate financial reporting for years if it is not caught and corrected close to go-live.
This work connects with our De-Risking Business, Financial Consulting, and Forensic Accounting services — ensuring accounting system integrity supports the broader financial management and risk framework of the business.
Failure Patterns
Common Accounting System Implementation Failures
These six issues account for most of what an independent implementation review finds — and each of them is materially cheaper to fix before go-live than after:
Incorrect Chart of Accounts
Account codes that do not reflect the business structure — requiring manual reclassification at every reporting period and producing financial statements that do not match management expectations.
Weak Access Controls
Users with access to both input and approve transactions, or to financial data outside their function — creating fraud risk that the accounting system itself facilitates rather than prevents.
Data Migration Errors
Opening balances that do not reconcile with the previous system — contaminating financial reporting from day one and requiring manual corrections for the life of the system.
GST Configuration Errors
Incorrect HSN/SAC codes, wrong tax rates, or incorrectly configured place of supply rules — producing GST returns that do not match the accounting system and creating reconciliation work at every return period.
Report Inaccuracies
System-generated reports that include incorrect transactions, exclude certain categories, or do not reconcile with the general ledger — undermining management confidence in the system.
Inadequate Audit Trail
Configuration that does not capture sufficient transaction detail for audit purposes — making it impossible to trace individual transactions from report back to source document.

Accounting Systems We Review
We conduct implementation reviews for all major ERP and accounting software platforms used by Indian businesses. For businesses running multiple systems — separate software for accounting, inventory, payroll, and GST — we also review the integration between systems, confirming that data flows correctly and reconciles across the different platforms.
