Financial Reporting and MIS Services
For Indian Businesses

Monthly management accounts, budget vs actual variance, debtors and inventory ageing, segment profitability and a KPI dashboard — delivered by the tenth working day, with written commentary rather than a spreadsheet dump.

What Is MIS in Accounting?

Your accounting software already knows what your business earned last month. What it does not tell you is which product line carried the margin, which customers are sitting ninety days overdue, or whether the bank balance will hold through the next quarter. Financial reporting and MIS services close that distance between data and decision.

This page explains what MIS reporting covers, how management accounts differ from statutory financial statements, who benefits most from outsourced financial reporting services, how the monthly cycle runs, and how the reporting pack changes across four industries. If you are comparing MIS services in Mumbai, it should give you a working benchmark.

MIS stands for Management Information System. In an accounting context it means the structured set of periodic reports that convert raw ledger data into information management can act on — profitability by segment, ageing of receivables, cash position, variance against budget, and the handful of operating metrics that actually drive the business.

The defining feature of MIS reporting is that it has no prescribed format. Statutory accounts must follow Schedule III of the Companies Act, 2013 and the applicable accounting standards. MIS reports answer to nobody but the management team, which is exactly why they are useful: they can be cut by branch, product, channel, project or customer — whatever dimension explains how your business makes money.

A well-built MIS is short. Six to ten pages that a promoter reads every month beat a forty-page pack that nobody opens. The discipline is in deciding what to leave out.

N D Savla & Associates prepares monthly MIS reports and management accounts for businesses across Mumbai, Pune and the wider country — manufacturers, traders, service firms, funded startups and family groups. The reporting pack is designed around what your management actually needs to decide, not around a standard template. For clients who also need the underlying books maintained, this sits alongside our bookkeeping and accounting services, so the reporting and the ledger are never out of step.

What Does a Monthly MIS Report Contain?

Most reporting packs are assembled from the same core components, adapted in emphasis to the business.

MIS ComponentWhat It ShowsDecision It Supports
Monthly P&L with comparativesRevenue, gross margin, EBITDA against last month, last year and budgetPricing, cost control, corrective action
Balance sheet summaryWorking capital, debt-equity, net worth movementBorrowing capacity and financial position
Cash flow and 13-week forecastOperating, investing and financing cash movement plus projected positionCollections, payment scheduling, short-term funding
Budget vs actual analysisVariance by line, split into volume, price and cost effectsWhere to intervene and who owns it
Debtors and creditors ageingOutstanding balances bucketed by 0–30, 31–60, 61–90 and 90+ daysCollection follow-up and supplier payment planning
Inventory and stock ageingSlow-moving and obsolete stock, cash conversion cyclePurchase planning and working capital release
Segment or product P&LContribution by product line, branch or business unitResource allocation and exit decisions

Note: MIS built on incomplete books is worse than no MIS. If the ledger is two months behind, accruals are unbooked or GST is unreconciled, the first phase of the engagement is bringing the books current — analysis comes after.

Who Needs Financial Reporting and MIS Services?

MIS reporting becomes necessary at the point where a promoter can no longer hold the whole business in their head. That threshold arrives at four fairly predictable moments.

Businesses Running on Tally with No Management Layer

Accounting software produces a consolidated profit and loss and a balance sheet. It does not produce gross margin by product category, month-on-month expense trends or a debtors ageing that anyone actually follows up. This is the single most common starting point for our MIS clients, and it usually pairs with outsourced accounting support in Mumbai so that the data feeding the reports is clean.

Companies with Bank or NBFC Facilities

Loan agreements almost always carry a covenant requiring periodic financial statements — quarterly unaudited accounts, annual audited accounts, or a chartered accountant certificate confirming the figures were drawn from the books. Missing these submissions is a technical default and damages the banking relationship long before it affects the sanction. Consistent financial reporting removes that risk entirely.

Funded Startups and PE-Backed Businesses

Investment agreements typically require monthly management accounts and a quarterly board pack. Investor reporting goes beyond the financials to include burn, runway, unit economics and a written commentary explaining what changed. Founders who assemble this from scratch each quarter lose days they cannot afford; a standing MIS process produces it as a by-product of the monthly close.

Multi-Entity and Multi-Branch Groups

Family groups often have accurate books for each entity and no consolidated view of the whole. Segment reporting brings the entities onto a common basis, allocates shared costs honestly and shows which units generate cash and which consume it. Where forward planning is also needed, the reporting layer connects naturally into financial planning and analysis.

How Has Management Reporting Evolved in India?

MIS reporting in India moved from ledger books to real-time dashboards in roughly three decades. The path explains why standards of timeliness and detail are so much higher now than they were even fifteen years ago.

Before 1991

Cost records under a controlled economy

In the licence-permit era, management reporting was largely cost accounting driven by cost audit requirements under the Companies Act, 1956 and by administered pricing in sectors such as cement, steel, sugar and fertiliser. Reports were prepared by hand or on early mainframes, were often weeks late, and served regulatory justification more than management decision-making. With demand largely assured, the commercial cost of slow information was low.

1991 onwards

Competition raises the cost of not knowing

Liberalisation removed industrial licensing across most sectors and exposed Indian companies to imports and foreign competition. Margins came under pressure and product-level profitability suddenly mattered. Tally and comparable accounting packages spread rapidly through the small and medium business segment during the 1990s, putting a computerised trial balance within reach of firms that had never had one.

2000s and 2010s

ERP, standards and formal reporting

ERP adoption moved mid-sized companies beyond a single accounting file and made monthly closes realistic. The Companies Act, 2013 introduced Schedule III as the prescribed format for financial statements and formalised board-level reporting and internal financial controls. Ind AS convergence from 2016 changed how revenue, leases and financial instruments appear in the accounts, and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 pushed lenders to watch forward cash flow rather than collateral alone.

Where things stand now

Ten to fifteen days is the new standard

GST from July 2017 created a monthly, machine-readable trail of sales and input credit, and e-invoicing extended it to transaction level. Cloud accounting and low-cost business intelligence tools have made live dashboards affordable for companies that could never have justified them a decade ago. The practical result is that a mid-sized Indian business is now expected to close its books and issue MIS reports within ten to fifteen days of month end — a standard that would have been unthinkable in 2005.

How Does Our Financial Reporting Process Work?

The engagement runs in eight steps. The first three are one-time design work, usually completed in two to four weeks; the remaining five repeat every month.

01

Requirements Discussion with Management

We start by asking what decisions you are trying to make and what you currently cannot see. The answers determine which reports are built and which are deliberately excluded, because an unread report costs money to produce and delivers nothing.
One-time design
02

Chart of Accounts and Cost Centre Review

Segment reporting is only possible if transactions carry the right tags. We restructure the chart of accounts and set up cost centres for branches, products or projects before any report is designed.
One-time design
03

MIS Template Design

We build the reporting templates in Excel, Power BI or your preferred tool, with the layout, comparatives and calculation logic fixed. Consistency month to month is what makes trends readable; templates that change every cycle destroy comparability.
One-time design
04

Monthly Data Compilation and Validation

Each month we pull data from the accounting software and any operational systems, then verify it — accruals booked, bank and GST reconciled, inventory valued, related-party balances agreed. Nothing is reported before it is checked.
Monthly cycle
05

Preparation of Financial Statements and Schedules

We produce the monthly P&L with comparatives, the balance sheet summary, the cash flow statement, and the supporting schedules for debtors ageing, creditors ageing and inventory movement.
Monthly cycle
06

Variance and Ageing Analysis

Every material variance is explained by cause rather than merely quantified, and the ageing schedules are annotated with the specific accounts that need attention. A number without a reason generates argument, not action.
Monthly cycle
07

Management Commentary and KPI Dashboard

We write a short commentary flagging what changed and why, and populate the dashboard with the five to seven measures that matter for your business. The commentary is where our judgement adds value beyond the arithmetic.
Monthly cycle
08

Delivery and Review Discussion

The pack is delivered by the tenth working day of the following month, followed by a call or a seat in your monthly management review to work through the findings and record the actions.
By the 10th working day

Where the requirement extends into forward planning, clients add budgeting and forecasting services so the monthly pack carries a rolling forecast alongside the actuals, or take the full MIS and budgeting service as a single engagement.

Before you submit

MIS delivered after the twentieth of the following month is history, not information. By then the next month is more than half gone and the window to correct anything has closed. Timeliness matters more than an extra decimal of precision.

How Does MIS Reporting Differ by Sector?

The structure of the pack is stable across industries. What changes is which schedule sits on the first page.

Manufacturing and MSME Units

Manufacturing MIS leads with cost per unit, capacity utilisation, yield and scrap. Material cost variance has to be separated from volume and price effects, because each calls for a different response. Working capital reporting is critical, and creditor days cannot simply be extended to improve the cash picture: Section 15 of the MSMED Act, 2006 governs payment terms to MSME suppliers and interest on delayed payment is disallowed as a deduction under the Income-tax Act.

Trading, Distribution and Retail

Here the debtors ageing and inventory ageing schedules carry more weight than the P&L itself. Margin has to be reported at SKU and channel level, because a distributor can grow turnover while losing money on a third of the catalogue. The cash conversion cycle — days from rupee spent on stock to rupee collected from customer — is usually the single most informative number in the pack.

IT Services, SaaS and Professional Firms

People-led businesses report on utilisation, realisation per hour, bench cost and attrition, since billable capacity is effectively the revenue line. Subscription businesses add recurring revenue, churn and net revenue retention, and need deferred revenue tracked separately because billing and revenue recognition diverge. Many of these clients run on cloud accounting, where we configure reporting directly through QuickBooks accounting support.

Real Estate, Hospitality and Project Businesses

Project-driven businesses need reporting at project level as well as entity level: cost incurred against sanctioned budget, cost-to-complete, and collections phased against milestones. In hospitality the operating measures are occupancy, average room rate and revenue per available room. Because project cycles run long, the cash flow forecast in these packs typically extends to twelve months rather than thirteen weeks.

Why Choose N D Savla & Associates for MIS Services?

Any firm can send a spreadsheet each month. These are the five things clients tell us made the difference.

Reports designed around your business, not a fixed template

The dimensions, the schedules and the dashboard measures come from how you actually earn money — by SKU, by branch, by project — rather than from a standard pack applied to every client.

Chartered accountants who validate before they report

Because the same firm handles audit, GST and income tax, the numbers in the MIS reconcile to what will eventually be filed. Management and statutory figures do not diverge and then have to be explained.

Commentary, not just numbers

Every pack carries a written analysis of what moved and why, with the specific accounts and actions flagged. That interpretation is the part that changes decisions.

Delivery by the tenth working day

A fixed, early delivery date is treated as a commitment, because late reporting removes the only real benefit of having the reporting at all.

One firm across the finance stack

Bookkeeping, MIS, FP&A, Virtual CFO, audit and compliance run from the same Mumbai office, so nothing falls between two service providers.

Where the reporting feeds statutory accounts, board disclosures or annual filings, we work from the formats and forms published by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs at mca.gov.in, so the management pack and the filed position stay reconcilable throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions About Financial Reporting and MIS

What is the difference between management accounts and statutory financial statements?
Management accounts are prepared for internal use, in whatever format management finds useful, usually monthly and without any statutory format requirement. Statutory financial statements are prepared for external regulatory purposes: companies must follow Schedule III of the Companies Act, 2013, comply with Ind AS or AS as applicable, and have the accounts audited before filing with the Registrar of Companies. Both draw on the same ledger, but they answer to different audiences and serve different purposes.
How quickly should monthly MIS reports be delivered?
Within ten to fifteen working days of month end is the practical standard for Indian mid-market businesses. Later than that and the information arrives after the decisions it should have informed have already been taken. Businesses under working capital pressure often add a weekly receivables and cash position update between the monthly packs, which is far more valuable than waiting for a more polished monthly report.
Can MIS be prepared if the books are not up to date?
Technically yes, but the output should not be relied on. MIS drawn from incomplete books produces confident numbers that are wrong, and decisions taken on them can be worse than decisions taken with no report at all. Where books have fallen behind, the correct sequence is to bring the ledger current, reconcile bank and GST positions, then build the reporting layer on top.
What software is used for MIS reporting and dashboards?
Excel remains the workhorse for most engagements because it is flexible, universally accessible and easy for a client team to take over. For clients wanting visual dashboards we build in Power BI or Looker Studio connected to the accounting data source. Where the requirement is for reports inside the accounting system itself, standard reports in Tally or QuickBooks can be configured to approximate the MIS format, though with less flexibility than a purpose-built pack.
How much do MIS and financial reporting services cost in India?
Fees are set by scope rather than a fixed rate card. The variables are transaction volume, number of entities or reporting segments, how much analysis and commentary is required, and whether the books are being maintained by us or by the client team. A standalone monthly MIS for a single-entity business sits at the lower end; a multi-entity consolidated pack with segment reporting and a rolling forecast sits considerably higher. We quote a fixed monthly fee after a scoping discussion rather than billing hourly.
